Staying up in Mlati/Sleman gives a new story to Jogja, an adventure that runs from the royal heritage of the south to modern and natural attractions of the north. The biggest commercial neighbor is Jogja City Mall (JCM), just 5-10 minutes’ drive away. One of the leading shopping centers in this part of town, with its imposing Roman-style architecture housing a cinema plus numerous eateries from fast food to respectable restaurants, it’s a cool place to spend an evening when you want some air-conditioned shopping without making your way all the way downtown.
Since the hotel is located just above the main cluster of city center traffic, it also acts as a strategic launchpad for visits up to Merapi. You are much nearer to Kaliurang’s area attractions such as Ullen Sentalu Museum—Java’s best museum by most accounts—and starting points of the now-famous Merapi Lava Tours (Jeep tours). Here we chop off about a 20-30 minute drive to the volcano from Malioboro; no small perk on those sunrise tours.
But here is the trade-off with respect to the city center that you have to understand. To get to Kraton (Sultan’s Palace), Taman Sari (Water Castle), or Malioboro Street, it will take about 20-30 minutes by car through traffic which can best be described as unpredictable in Yogya. The area around the hotel is not meant for walking; this is a functional district with some convenience stores and local warungs (eateries), but without any pedestrian-friendly atmosphere like in tourist zones.
